No 4 Victoria Street

Abner Goddard – owner of lock-up garages (Source: Petrol Licence Records). Although the address is No 4 Victoria Street, this business and its successors really encompass No 6 next door (which becomes a petrol filling station) and the large mass of land to the rear. The lock-up garages themselves, which are rented out, are on this land which is now a housing development.

The Goddard family has considerable business interests in the town. Originally bicycle makers and retailers operating out of Nos 60-62 High Street and the yard to the rear of it which runs through to 9-11 Victoria Street, they later diversify into motor services.

No 4 is on the left above. The Gift shop, 'Serendipity' (No 6) was part of the business. Petrol pumps were situated to its side where the black wooden fence is.

Below can be seen what is now called 'Drayman's Yard' with the new Adnams' store on the right. This yard previously gave access to the Goddard lock-up garages, and more recently, to the Adnams Distribution Centre.
